Five tips for more unity in your interior

Is your home cluttered? Or is it a mix of styles and colors? Would you like to create more unity in your interior? A unified interior creates peace and order.

To create unity in your interior, you can work with three key elements: color, texture, and shape. By mixing and matching these elements, you create a personal interior while simultaneously creating a cohesive whole.

With our five tips, you can bring peace and unity to your interior. It seems simple, but there are only a few steps to achieving a calm interior. And of course, don’t forget to declutter! Anything that doesn’t fit with your choices should be cleared away, given away, or sold.

Five tips for more unity in your interior

  1. Color. The color choices you make have a major impact on how an interior feels. To create more unity, you can use the 60-30-10 rule. In this case, you choose three colors. The first color should be used for 60% of the space. This is your primary color. The second color is the secondary color and should account for 30% of the space, while the last color is an accent color and should account for 10% of the space.
  2. Structure. Choose a maximum of three materials that complement each other well. Create combinations of materials that work well together, for example, natural materials like wood, stone, and concrete. Or a combination of natural stone. Too many different materials can create a sense of unrest, so don’t mix different types of wood, for example.
  3. Shape. You can do more with shape than you might expect. For example, choose clean lines, such as a sleek sofa, straight lines on the floor in the form of planks or tiles, and a sleek rug. Or use organic shapes with a round ottoman, an organic table, and round cushions.
  4. Repetition. Repetition creates unity and tranquility. Extend the choices you make throughout all rooms, including the outdoors. Going for organic? Then use this shape from the front door to upstairs and into the garden.
  5. Stand out. To avoid feeling like you’re in a showroom or episode of VT Wonen, also ensure eye-catching elements. Use furniture, color, or art that stands out a bit. An antique cabinet in a modern interior, large plants, or perhaps paint the window frames in a striking pattern.

How to implement these steps

It sounds very easy, but how do you implement this step by step? And where do you start?

  1. Examine the colors you already have in your interior. Do you want to change them? Or do you keep the base color and look for a beautiful basic palette?
  2. What textures do you have now? And which do you want to keep? Textures that don’t match (for example, a different wood color on a piece of furniture or a steel table) can be sold on Marktplaats. Give them a new life.
  3. Do the same with shapes. Which shapes do you want to keep? And which don’t? Store these or sell them.
  4. Keep the accessories that match the color, shape, and texture. The rest (only what you really want to keep) can be stored or sold.
  5. Get started and paint where necessary, buy new furniture if necessary, and decorate everything. Add new items, accessories, and perhaps even plants.
